GGG HISTORISCH
C.E. GÄTCKE´S GLAS FABRIKEN
C.E. Gätcke´s Glasfabriken, founded in 1873 as " Holsteinische Glashütte " (Holsteinische glass manufacturers ) and 3 years later taken over by the merchant Christian Ernst Gätcke, was one of several glass manufacturers in a suburb of Hamburg known today as Ottensen.
By the end of the last century Gätcke had developed large business employing more than 350 people. The production was mainly for export and for the breweries in and around Hamburg.
In 1929 Gätcke closed down as the last glass manufacturer in today´s Ottensen. The financial investment necessary to automate the production was simply too great. In addition the cost of the coal needed to heat the furnaces had increased tremendously.
In the 1930´s Siemens Glashütte of Dresden and their Hamburg based agent F. Dau & Sohn took over an equal share each of Gätcke and of the sales licence granted to Gätcke. This licence, issued by the Glaskartell ( glass board ) allowed sales of specific quantities of glass packaging.
Since then Gätcke and Dau have operated in parallel with the same team of people for both companies.
Packaging used for industrial purposes which was mainly glass at that time has been driven forwards over the years under the Gätcke name.
In 1945 the company started up again from scratch. In the early 1950´s the 4th generation represented by Detlef Lienau and Edzard Börner took over the responsibility for the management of the company.
For more than 20 years the 5th generation represented by Harold Lienau and Peter Boerner is running the company.
In order to assure continuity for the coming years Martin Riepe and Kai Lorenzen became partners in January 2009 after having worked with Gätcke for a number of years.
